Harriet Tubman
She was born a slave and when she was only 12 years old, a slave owner was about to throw a heavy metal weight at an escaped slave, and Harriet stepped in front of the slave and the weight hit her head instead. This caused her lifelong dizziness, pain, and spells of hypersomnia.
Can you believe after all that, and being a slave, she still invented a network of tunnels and shortcuts to free her fellow slaves? She also “never lost a passenger” so yeah, she’s pretty IMPRESSIVE.
After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she helped guide fugitives farther north into British North America and helped newly freed slaves find work.
When the Civil War began, Tubman worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. Can you believe that?! She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, she guided the raid at Combahee Ferry, which liberated more than 700 slaves.
She was active in the women’s suffrage movement until illness overtook her. She helped establish an elderly home for African Americans, which she had to be admitted to years later. After she died in 1913, she became an icon of courage and freedom.
What’s Kim Known For?
Kim Kardashian West is an American media personality, businesswoman, socialite, model, and actress. West first gained media attention as a friend and stylist of Paris Hilton but received wider notice after a 2003 sex tape with her former boyfriend Ray J was released in 2007.
Later that year, she and her family began to appear in the E! reality television series Keeping Up with The Kardashians. Its success soon led to the creation of spin-offs including Kourtney and Kim Take New York and Kourtney and Kim Take Miami.
She married rapper Kanye West in 2014, which also gave significant media coverage. She’s released lots of products tied to her name, including a photo book she released in 2015 called Selfish, a 2014 mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, lots of clothing products, and an eponymous personal app.
Time magazine included West on their list of 2015’s 100 most influential people, while Vogue described her in 2016 as a “pop culture phenomenon.”
She was reported to be the highest-paid reality television personality of 2015, with her estimated total earnings exceeding US $53 million.
Advocacy in 2019
Kim Kardashian has been a huge advocate for a few different things.
She has advocated for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide on numerous occasions and encouraged President Barack Obama and the United States government to consider its acknowledgment.
In April 2015, West traveled to Armenia and visited the Armenian Genocide memorial Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan. In April 2016, West wrote an article condemning The Wall Street Journal for running an advertisement denying the Armenian Genocide.
West has also worked in the area of prison reform, advocating for the commutation of the sentence of Chris Young, and also of Alice Marie Johnson, a woman who received a life sentence for a first-time drug offense as the leader of a major cocaine ring in Tennessee, which was granted by President Donald Trump in June 2018.
She supported the First Step Act, which enacted major reforms in the US prison system, basically freeing a bunch of people that may be in jail unjustly, or for far too long to keep it simple.
In April of 2019, it was revealed in Vogue that West was studying to pass the bar exam by “reading the law.”
Kim and Harriet | Heroines
I look at these women as VERY VERY similar. I don’t hold either in any HIGHER regard than the other. Let me explain.
I don’t hold Harriet in higher regard because she lived long ago so she didn’t have the same opportunities as Kim, and she was able to accomplish what she accomplished ‘back in the day’.
Nor do I think Kim had it easy because she was born with certain advantages, and could walk into the White House blah blah.
I just think that these two women are really hard workers. I believe they are GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL in whatever endeavor they might choose to pursue. I do personally believe that the MENTALITY of these two women is so similar that it’s uncanny.
I also believe that they both will
choose to succeed regardless of the obstacles that lie in front of them, whether you were born in 1980 or 1822, a PIT BULL is still a PIT BULL.
You can’t imagine what it’s like, Harriet Tubman was born a black slave woman. NO NO Do you understand what their life MAY HAVE BEEN LIKE? RAPE, Beatings, poverty, other snitching slaves, migrating WITH scared slaves to freedom, erecting a route, network, and trusted contacts to free 700 people and not lose 1.
GTFOH – She’s a BEAST
Kim is RICH…nah nah, don’t miss that. SHE’S RICH and has absolutely NO REASON to pursue this endeavor. But she is. President Trump is typically covered as a man who cannot be worked with or reasoned with. But she did. She visits the White House, with her goal in mind, agenda in hand, and walks out with RESULTS!
Nah nah…she has no reason to expose herself in the way she does. She’s so wealthy that she doesn’t need to concern herself with this. These women are willing to RISK A LOT to help others.
And for that… Harriet and Kim – I thank you.
I could learn a thing or two from these women. We ALL could.
